Introduction

We've been photographing weddings at Peterson House for years, and it remains one of our favourite venues in the Hunter Valley. There's something about the way light floods through the Chapel's tall windows in the late afternoon, or how the sandstone glows during golden hour, that makes every wedding here feel special.

From intimate ceremonies in the Chapel to celebrations that spill across the vineyards, we've seen Peterson House transform for dozens of couples - each one making it uniquely their own. Whether you're considering Peterson House for your wedding or have already booked, this guide brings together everything we've learned from our time here: the spaces that photograph beautifully, the logistical details that matter, and real wedding stories that show what's possible.

About Peterson House

Situated at the gateway to the Hunter Valley on the corner of Wine Country Drive and Broke Road, Peterson House is known for two things: exceptional sparkling wine (they have the largest collection in the region) and their striking sandstone architecture.

The Chapel

The property offers three distinct ceremony and reception spaces. The Chapel features handcrafted timber trusses and sandstone blocks, with seating for over 200 guests. It's architecturally designed with high ceilings and a statement chandelier that becomes a focal point as natural light fades and the space transforms for evening celebrations.

Vineyard Marquee

The Vineyard Marquee is a permanent structure adorned with fairy lights, elegant draping, and chandeliers, with glass doors that open to vineyard views. It can accommodate up to 250 guests and offers the romance of a marquee wedding with the reliability of a permanent structure.

Restaurant CuvƩe

Restaurant CuvƩe is housed within the main sandstone building and features exposed timber beams with picturesque vineyard views. It's an intimate space that works beautifully for seated receptions up to 140 guests, with a sun-drenched veranda perfect for cocktail hour.

The property also includes cottage gardens, sprawling vineyards, and a picturesque pond with a jetty - all available for photographs and intimate outdoor ceremonies.

What Makes Peterson House Special for Weddings

The Chapel: Architecture and Light

The Chapel is the jewel of Peterson House, and for good reason. Built with the same sandstone aesthetic that runs throughout the property, it manages to feel both grand and intimate. The sandstone building features handcrafted timber trusses and has been cleverly designed for photography.

The Chapel also offers something practical that often gets overlooked: it's fully air-conditioned, which is crucial in the Hunter Valley where temperatures routinely go above 40°C. Your guests-especially elderly family members and young children-will be comfortable throughout the ceremony.

After the ceremony, many couples choose to flip the Chapel for their reception. The transformation is dramatic. Those same sandstone walls and timber beams that created a romantic ceremony backdrop become an atmospheric dining space, with the chandelier glowing above long banquet tables. It's an unexpected choice that guests always remember.

What we love about shooting here: the abundant natural light. Large windows flood the space throughout the day, which means your ceremony photographs will be bright and natural without harsh shadows. The high ceilings and timber trusses create beautiful leading lines in photographs, and the chandelier becomes a stunning focal point for detail shots.

Golden Hour and Photo Locations

Peterson House is surrounded by sprawling vineyards, charming cottage gardens, and a picturesque pond with a jetty. These aren't just pretty features - they're diverse backdrops that allow us to create varied imagery throughout your wedding day.

The vineyards are at their best during golden hour (roughly an hour before sunset). The rows create natural leading lines, and the soft light makes everything glow. We often take couples into the vines just after the ceremony while guests are enjoying cocktail hour-it's a quiet moment in an otherwise busy day.

The pond and jetty offer something different: a more intimate, reflective setting. It works particularly well for quieter couples or for sunset portraits. The cottage gardens near the main building provide a softer, more romantic backdrop with seasonal blooms.

One of our favourite spots is the area just outside the Chapel entrance. The sandstone facade and large timber doors create a dramatic backdrop, and the open space allows for natural bridal party shots without feeling staged.

Seasonal Considerations

Hunter Valley weddings are beautiful year-round, but each season brings different considerations at Peterson House.

Spring and Autumn are the sweet spot. Temperatures are comfortable for outdoor cocktail hours and garden ceremonies. The gardens are at their most beautiful, and the light is softer throughout the day. These seasons also mean you can use outdoor ceremony options without worrying about extreme heat.

Summer weddings are popular, but the heat is real. Outdoor ceremonies at Peterson House have limited shade, so on hot summer days guests will be in full sun. If you're planning a summer wedding, we strongly recommend using the air-conditioned Chapel for your ceremony. You'll still get beautiful photographs on the property during cooler parts of the day-early morning or golden hour.

Winter offers crisp, clear days and often the most dramatic light for photographs. The sandstone buildings look particularly beautiful in winter light. If you're considering an outdoor ceremony, winter weather is actually ideal-cool but not cold, and the lack of shade becomes an advantage with lower winter sun angles.

Reception Space Versatility

Each reception space at Peterson House has a distinct personality, and we've seen all three styled beautifully in different ways.

The Chapel Reception

Works best for couples who want drama and intimacy. The high ceilings and sandstone create a sense of occasion, while the space itself encourages closeness. It's perfect for long banquet tables and a more European approach to seating. The natural acoustics also make speeches and toasts feel more emotional—there's something about the stone walls that amplifies the significance of the moment.

Restaurant CuvƩe

The classic choice. The exposed timber beams and vineyard views create a sophisticated but unpretentious atmosphere. It's the kind of space that photographs beautifully without needing excessive styling—the architecture does the work. The adjacent veranda is perfect for that liminal time between ceremony and reception when guests need somewhere to gather.

The Vineyard Marquee

Offers the most flexibility. The clear walls can be rolled up or down depending on the weather, which means you get the romance of being surrounded by vines with the security of a permanent structure. The fairy lights and chandeliers create a magical atmosphere once the sun sets, and the hardwood floors are excellent for dancing.

Best Time to Get Married Here

Peak season (September through May) offers the most reliable weather and the longest daylight hours for photographs. The property looks lush and green, and you have more flexibility for outdoor elements.

Off-peak (June through August) can be surprisingly beautiful. Winter light in the Hunter Valley is clear and golden, and the sandstone architecture looks particularly striking. You'll have less competition for accommodation, and the cooler weather means comfortable conditions for both ceremonies and receptions.

Weather patterns: The Hunter Valley can be hot and dry in summer, with occasional storms. Autumn is generally the most stable season weather-wise, followed by spring. Winter brings crisp, clear days but can be cool in the evenings—important to consider if you're planning an outdoor cocktail hour.

Planning Your Wedding at Peterson House

Location and Accessibility

Peterson House is situated on the corner of Wine Country Drive and Broke Road, often called the gateway to the Hunter Valley. It's approximately two hours' drive from Sydney and 45 minutes from Newcastle.

This central location is one of Peterson House's major advantages. The venue is within a minute or two of most of the Hunter Valley's best accommodation options. Your guests won't need to travel far after the reception, which is particularly important if they've been enjoying the excellent wine selection.

The property has ample parking on-site, and the main buildings are accessible for guests with mobility considerations. The Chapel in particular has been designed with accessibility in mind.

Luxury: Spicers Vineyards Estate, The Vintage, Chateau Elan

Mid-range: Hunter Valley Resort, Oaks Cypress Lakes, Crowne Plaza

Budget-friendly: Various motels and B&Bs along Broke Road and Wine Country Drive

Nearby Accommodation

The Hunter Valley has extensive accommodation options within a few minutes' drive:

Many couples choose to book a block of rooms at a nearby resort for their guests. The proximity to multiple accommodation styles means you can cater to different guest budgets without anyone feeling far from the action.

What to Know Before Booking

Capacity: The Chapel seats 200+ for ceremonies. Restaurant CuvƩe accommodates up to 140 for seated receptions. The Vineyard Marquee can seat up to 250 guests.

Venue flexibility: One of Peterson House's strengths is offering multiple venue configurations. You can use the Chapel for ceremony and reception, or split ceremony and reception across different spaces. You'll have access to the entire property for photographs.

Food and beverage: Restaurant CuvĆ©e's menus are crafted by in-house chefs and showcase local produce. The venue is renowned for their sparkling wine selection—an obvious pairing for a Hunter Valley wedding.

Timing: Most wedding ceremonies begin between 3pm and 5pm, allowing time for photographs in good light and a comfortable transition to reception. Summer ceremonies often start slightly later to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Styling and Vendors

The beauty of Peterson House is that it needs minimal styling to look spectacular. The sandstone, timber beams, and architectural features do most of the work.

What works well:

Natural, organic styling that complements the surroundings. Think greenery, candles, minimal florals, and letting the architecture be the hero. The space can handle both formal elegance and relaxed romance—it's versatile.

What to consider:

The sandstone and timber have warm tones, so colour palettes that work with (rather than against) these natural elements tend to photograph best. Cool whites can look stark; warmer creams and ivories feel more cohesive.

Vendor access:

The property has good access for vendors, and the permanent structures (particularly the Chapel and Marquee) mean less setup stress compared to venues requiring full builds.

Our approach is editorial and unobtrusive. We're drawn to real moments, beautiful light, and telling stories that feel authentic to each couple. The Hunter Valley-with its vineyards, historic properties, and incredible natural light-is the perfect backdrop for the kind of imagery we love creating.
